Restaurant Cleanliness Surveys: Questions About Tables, Dining Areas, and Restrooms
Cleanliness can vary across the dining room, tables, floors, dishes, and restrooms. Ask about the areas guests experience and use a separate staff checklist for routine inspections.
Choose areas guests can assess
A focused question can help identify which area a guest is referring to.
- Dining area
- Table and seating
- Floor
- Dishes and utensils
- Restroom
Sample questions
Use only the questions that fit your restaurant and the experience you want to review.
- Was your table clean when you sat down?
- How clean did the dining area feel?
- Was the restroom in a satisfactory condition?
Combine guest feedback with staff checks
Guest feedback reflects an observed visit. A cleaning checklist helps the team verify routine tasks. The two methods have different purposes and can complement each other.
Ask about cleanliness separately from food and service
Food and service can be well received while a table or restroom affects the overall visit. Cleanliness is a distinct part of the guest experience and of the QSC framework.
Remember that cleanliness changes over the day
A dining room may be clean at opening and look different after lunch or dinner service. If guests mention cleanliness, review the time of the response and the level of activity when that information is available.
Guest impressions do not replace food-safety checks
A survey can describe visible cleanliness and comfort, such as what a guest saw in the dining area. It cannot replace the restaurant’s legally required and operational checks for food safety, temperature, handwashing, or cross-contamination.
Use specific locations and actions
A general comment that the restaurant felt unclean does not identify where to look. Group comments by table, restroom, or floor when the information is available, then make the action specific—for example, check table condiments after lunch service or inspect the restroom at set times.
